Throughout the winter months, how are you planning to store your segway scooter? Since winter weather produces icy and snowy conditions, for e-scooter users, winter can be harsh on your scooter. Depending on your region, winter conditions can be intense, and it's best not to ride your scooter during this time.
So, how do you maintain your segway scooter during winter? What things should you do to prepare for storing your scooter in the winter? Like storing a motorcycle during the winter, maintaining the exterior, motor, and tires on your segway scooter from the damaging effects of winter weather is a process you can learn.
So read on as we'll take a closer look at taking care of everything on your segway scooter during winter. Even if your segway scooter has already experienced a few winters, keep reading because you might learn something new. It could keep your segway scooter in tip-top shape!
To keep your segway scooter in good condition during the winter, ideally, it should be stored in a cool and dry environment like a garage, attic, basement or shed. If you live in an apartment or condominium and you're not planning to use your segway scooter during the winter time, if you don't have access to a garage or shed, you might have to rent out a storage unit and pay a monthly price while it's stored away.
Once you've established the area where your segway scooter will be stored during the winter, remove any piles of boxes and declutter the space to make room for the scooter.
Before storing your segway scooter for the winter, be sure to clean it by washing it with mild liquid soap and warm water. Wipe it down thoroughly with microfiber towels to prevent corrosion or rusting on its most exposed part. Then dry off the scooter with another set of dry towels for a full shine. If your scooter has a chain, take warm water, brush, and mild liquid soap and degrease the chain.
Once you're finished removing the grease, rinse it with clean water to remove any excess dirt and dry it with a microfiber towel.
After cleaning and drying your segway scooter, silicone grease and lubricate the mechanical parts, rubber elements, and tires. Next, add a little lubricant on your scooter's chain and spread it sparingly to get enough coverage. Lubricating these areas ensures your scooter doesn't rust while in winter storage.
Once you're done cleaning and lubricating your scooter, it's time to fold it up and lock it. If you still have the original box it came in, place your segway scooter in it and store it in the dry and clean area of your storage space. Ideally, the storage space should be at room temperature as it will perform better in non-extreme temperatures.
Suppose you misplaced the original packaging. In that case, you can buy a breathable, protective cover for your segway scooter and store it there.
Add an extra layer of protection by preventing your scooter from being stolen with an external lock. The most common locks used to protect segway scooters include:
U-lock or D-lock – If you're storing your scooter outside a box, put the lock bars between one of the wheels and an object.
Heavy Duty Chain – Similar to using a U-lock or D-lock, place the chain as tight as possible.
Disc Lock – To prevent a thief from driving off in your scooter, attach a disc lock to the brake discs to stop it from moving.
If you live in an area with a lot of theft, opt for an external lock and a scooter alarm for double protection. A scooter alarm can connect to your phone through its app. And if someone tries to move it, even with the slightest tilt, you'll receive a notification on your phone that there's movement.
If there are some days when you must take out your segway scooter during winter, you should know that your tire pressure may drop due to the cold temperatures. This increases the chance of riding resistance and wear and tear on its tires.
Suppose you plan to use your scooter during the winter time. In that case, we suggest you keep the tires inflated and place the scooter on a paddock stand, so it's not sitting on the concrete floor to prevent flat-spotting of your tires.
Removing the battery from your segway scooter is critical before storing it. With models where the battery is not removable, detach it from the leads to prevent power leaks. Even if you don't plan to use it during winter, keep your battery from running out of charge, as it could get damaged.
On the other hand, you shouldn't charge the battery to 100% and store it away. It could drain quickly and lose its capacity faster. We recommend charging it up to 60% once every month while in storage. Charging the battery every month will ensure that your battery's lifeline stays optimized and be ready for spring.
When you charge the battery once a month, it's a good idea to turn your segway scooter off and on to test that it's working correctly. If it's challenging to start, even with a charged battery, this is a sign that it might need to be repaired. Please take it to a professional e-scooter repair service before spring arrives to have it fixed.
